Portfolio Power: The New Way to Showcase All Your Job Skills and Experiences
by Martin Kimeldorf  185 pages.

Recommended: Valuable Career Resource

Martin Kimeldorf’s book contains a wealth of information about the value of having a portfolio, how to construct one and how to use it. The last chapter even has some suggestions for creating an electronic portfolio.

Beginning with Chapter 3, the focus on career portfolios becomes intense, with more than 25 pages devoted to the construction phase, including 10 exercises that will help you clarify your self-marketing plan and career direction. I would use this chapter more as a resource to return to periodically for skills clarification. If you are currently working, are busy on the job and don’t have time to go through all of the exercises, you will probably not have time to construct a portfolio yourself. The activities are time consuming! Chapters 4 and 5 are important to anyone who wants to job search or improve a career profile. They cover the uses of a portfolio in job search, including the interview phase, and how to use a portfolio for performance reviews and raises and promotions.

Considering all of the information packed into this book, this is a good purchase to make if you are seriously interested in taking responsibility for your own career. It will help you with the “in-the-box” drill and prepare you for the resume phase of a job search. It will be obvious, however, that you will not be able to build your own career portfolio quickly to launch the campaign. Do-it-yourselfers will need to understand and do a realistic time estimate for this activity.

Overall, this is a good investment.
